The first Tribeup social media coffee talk

Was more than awesome.

I still remember how it started as an experiment about 7 months ago, not long after I started to blog about social media marketing.

Everything was driven by a strong feeling to share with those who's interested to find out more about new media marketing, then eventually evolved into something that I truly enjoy doing now, which is Tribeup Media.

Check out the photos before you read on.

Well it was not entirely perfect, but the discussions happened were really cool. Here's a few things we've discussed.

  1. We had Shoggy to share with us about his extra-ordinary family business - Bliss Memorial park. Everyone contributed their ideas or experience on how to market the services with both traditional and non-traditional approaches, and we also discussed about the possibilities on bringing it to the social web.
  2. We also had Zul and David to share with us their experience in personal branding leveraging on the online channels such as Friendster (the dinosaur social network) and blog, inspiring success story indeed. Here's Zul's blog, and David's website.
  3. At last we discussed a little about F&B industry and how geo-tagging social networks and applications are going to change the experience and what are the possibilities for F&B outlets and retail businesses to leverage on these up-and-coming social wave.

On top of that, we had good coffee and good finger foods thanks to Paddington House of Pencakes and yes they've been there since Queensbay Mall started, if you are wondering. :)

On top of those names mentioned above, thanks to Kah Lee for all the help , Kend the photographer for the awesome photos, and Geoffrey, Skypaul, Clarence, Dennis and Kevin for joining us. A big thank you from Terence and I for making this happen.

More details about the event and discussion topics check out Tribeup Media (hopefully soon) and if you're interested to join us next round, sign up to our newsletter here.

I don't mean to be philosophical

But reading Ogilvy on Advertising is seriously a roller coaster experience that rocks my thoughts.

According to the advertising legend there are few ways to identify advertising (or marketing?) big ideas, here goes:
  1. Did it make you gasp when first saw it?
  2. Do you wish you have thought of it yourself?
  3. Is it unique?
  4. Does it fit the strategy to perfection?
  5. Could it be used for 30 years?
I mean, 30 years? Seriously!

How many of the ads out there these days fits into any of these criteria? Especially the 30 years duration, that's quite a long probation period I'd say. I'm on my way doing research for a few articles that's about to come to their deadlines in a few weeks (some even days) time and this book has confirmed a few of my principles and thoughts.

Among others, I really believe that marketing is a process of enriching people's lives, because it helps people to make decision in a market that every products looks and smells the same. We help them to choose. (Another thing I strongly believe in, is design)

Ogilvy puts it best: It is about the positively good. In a parity market, product that wins in creating confidence that the product is positively good among the consumers, wins.

Time to start packing for dinner, gotta hit somewhere that I can watch the next match. Have a good week ahead folks.

What am I doing now?

Many people asked me this question, and am really sorry for not updating for a long while.

If you followed my posts on Facebook or Twitter or the social media marketing blog that I've been working on for awhile, you probably realize that I'm no longer with Fullhouse. I left at the beginning of May 2010 and went on to pursuit my passion in new media marketing, hence Tribeup Media was born as the successor of my previous consulting enterprise.

Things are fun and a little crazy but I guess I'm having all the fun I have while doing something that I believe will change the world a little bit. Currently am working with a few clients on their marketing campaigns on social media and a pet project with a bunch of interesting people.

Will update you guys more from time to time, stay tuned.

PS: If you see a fella who looks like me hanging around at any Starbucks outlet, yes that might be me, come and buy me a coffee :)
